What is MIL-STD-810?
MIL-STD-810 is a US Department of Defense test method standard describing environmental engineering considerations and laboratory tests. It is widely referenced in European defence procurement as well.
Tailoring, not a checklist
The standard emphasises tailoring: test methods and levels should reflect the equipment's expected life-cycle environment, rather than applying every method by default.
Commonly used test methods
Frequently referenced method areas include:
- High and low temperature
- Temperature shock
- Humidity
- Sand and dust
- Vibration
- Mechanical shock
Preparing for a test programme
Suppliers typically define the life-cycle environmental profile, agree a test plan with the customer and select a laboratory with the relevant equipment and experience.
